Preparing a home for its photographs

Most homes need less styling than owners expect. A short guide to the week before the photographer arrives.

The photographs are the first viewing most buyers will have, so it is worth getting them right. The good news is that architect-designed homes usually need less styling, not more.

The week before

Clear surfaces, remove most personal items and take out roughly a third of the furniture. Replace any tired bulbs with a single warm colour temperature and open every blind the evening before.

On the day, we shoot in the order of the light. Kitchens and east-facing rooms first, living spaces through the afternoon and exteriors at dusk, when the house begins to glow.
